Methods

Emergency services include: fire halls, public hospitals, EMS stations, community centres, seismically upgraded schools, convention centres, and major sports arenas. The median scores from the survey were taken for each category to develop the weighting.

Only upgraded schools were included because one that is not safe before, during, or after an earthquake could not provide aide to displaced people. Although evacuations shelters were included in the survey, it is excluded from the map because community centres, schools, and convention centres become shelters in an emergency.

Once the scores were standardized, MCE was used to create this map.

Age, population density, income, education level, and single-parent households are the social factors included in this map. The data came from the 2006 census due to errors in the 2011 census. Again, the median scores from the survey were used to develop the weighting factors.

Education level is based off of completion of high school. Age is based off of those 65 years or older because the elderly are more vulnerable in an earthquake. Vulnerable populations were included in the survey but omitted here because the age category covers the elder. Children, a vulnerable population, were omitted in the data because single-parent households cover some of the population and a child would not be left alone that they could be greatly affected by an earthquake.

Due to missing census data, areas around False Creek are missing information.

Again, after standardizing the scores, MCE was used.
